Free Tree Planting Seminar

Wed, Feb. 7, 2012, 6PM, @ the Centre Township Public Library, 1150 East Kern Rd., South Bend (intersection of Miami and Kern)

RSVP Today

Do you know what life forms live both above ground and below at the same time?  Here is a hint; these organisms produce food, fiber & shelter for both humans & animals.  They can grow taller than a four story building, or be trimmed small enough to be kept in your home?  We are talking about trees of course!

Mark your calendars for a FREE tree planting seminar to be held Wednesday Feb. 7, 2012 at 6:00 PM hosted by the St. Joseph County Soil & Water Conservation District. Trees are amazing organisms, and when planted in the right areas they can be useful tools as well!  Did you know that if you plant the proper tree in the correct place in your yard, it will help cool your home via shade from the summer sun?  That same tree could also help keep your house warm in the winter by blocking bitterly cold winds.  Depending on what type of tree you plant, you could also get some food in the form of nuts or fruit.  Those same nuts & fruit may also attract some wildlife you can enjoy watching as they eat some tasty treats from your tree.

Larger areas of planted trees can be very useful for very different reasons than trees that are planted individually in your yard.  Large areas of trees can help reduce soil erosion on steep hill sides, provide habitat for various wildlife, and provide numerous possibilities for recreation.  To ensure that a large area of planted trees remains healthy it needs to be properly maintained, with help from a private consulting forester or a state forester.  This maintenance may include thinning and responsible timber harvests as the trees grow and mature, in order to allow younger trees the needed light & space to begin the next generation in a forest.  The responsible timber harvests can also provide VERY significant sources of revenues to land owners, as well as a needed source of raw materials to society, such as lumber for new homes.

If you would like more information about planting trees then plan to attend this seminar.  The seminar will, at the Centre Township Branch of the St. Joseph County Library, located on the corner of Miami and Kern Rd. Guest Speaker Joe Long of J K Tree Farms in North Liberty, IN will be talking on selection and planting methods for various tree species. For more information or to register contact the SWCD office at 574-291-7444 ext. 3.

Artist Group: Countryside Montessori School, South Bend

PHOTO: Rain Barrel underwritten by Coca-Cola Bottling Company of Indiana

Countryside Montessori School was established over 27 years ago for children between the ages of 3 to 6 years old. The Montessori method is primarily an "education for life", a way of understanding children's needs as individuals and of assisting them to develop their potential to the fullest. It is concerned with the whole person:  intellect, will and emotions, and, by allowing children to develop freely within a prepared environment, helps them to acquire control and understanding of themselves and the world around them.

Art is an integral part of the Montessori curriculum. Once children are introduced to a particular medium, they are free to create. With the help of the children, teachers and parents we came up with the idea to use the children's fingerprints to create our beautiful design. We decided to use a garden theme as our flower garden at our school as it is an extension of our inside environment. The children care and tend the garden as a part of learning practical living skills and take pride in their work. We truly enjoyed this opportunity to participate in this project.

A Proud Underwriter

Over the next several months, we at the St. Joseph County Soil & Water Conservation District (SWCD) will be sending "mini-features" on a community water conservation project that will culminate on May 4, 2012 with the 2nd Annual Michiana Rain Barrel Art Auction.

As a Fellow with IUSB's Center for a Sustainable Future, Kathleen Petitjean has enlisted 15 artists and artist groups, including local school groups, to showcase their artistic talents on rain barrels converted from repurposed 55-gallon Coca Cola syrup barrels.  After being coated by Lochmandy Collision Center with an eco-friendlier automotive clear coat to protect the artwork, the barrels will be displayed at underwriting businesses and organizations for about a month early this spring.  Following this display period, the barrels will be sold at a public auction on the evening of May 4, 2012 at the South Bend Museum of Art. The purpose of the Rain Barrel Auction is to bring greater awareness to how precious our water supply is, and how we can use it in a more sustainable fashion. Proceeds from the sale of each barrel will be split between the artists and the Center for a Sustainable Future.

As an underwriter and collaborator on this project, we at the St. Joseph County SWCD look forward to bringing you regular updates!

A MESSAGE FROM
THE ST. JOSEPH COUNTY
SOIL & WATER
CONSERVATION DISTRICT

1unknownname

Our 2011 Annual Report -
Our Message is
SOIL & WATER CONSERVATION,
and We Put our MONEY Where Our Mouth Is

Click on THIS LINK and you will be taken to our 2011 Annual Report (in pdf format)

Education is the KEY.  How many times have we heard these words?

The St. Joseph County Soil & Water Conservation District (SWCD) makes every effort to live by these words, and we take seriously the fact that education can take many forms—whether through presentations to youth, workshops and seminars for adults, newsletter articles, participating in community events, attending staff trainings to better serve our community, informal “teachable  moments” when delivering technical  assistance, or working with conservation partners (especially the USDA-Natural Resources Conservation Service, or NRCS) to implement conservation   practices that inspire others to learn more about how they, too, can play a role in conserving our soil and water  resources.  Ever since the creation of the SWCD back in 1959, providing educational opportunities and promoting public awareness in various forms and to all ages has been a driving force behind the goals and mission of this SWCD.

As you can imagine, these efforts don’t come cheap. St. Joseph County SWCD does receive limited funding from federal, state, local and private entities to implement projects that specifically benefit St. Joseph County. However, as many government and non-government entities have experienced, funding is limited and in constant danger of being cut year to year, and 2012 is looking to be an   especially questionable year for us as far as funding goes. Despite this bleak outlook, we are proud to present to you our 2011 Annual Report to   illustrate the important work that we do toward spreading the message of CONSERVATION, a message that is crucial today, tomorrow, and for generations to come.  With the continued cooperation and financial support of concerned citizens, organizations, and businesses, we are  determined to continue our efforts to meet—and exceed—the challenges of the natural resource conservation needs of St. Joseph County,  Indiana just as we have done for the past 52 years.

We are not in the habit of bluntly asking for you, as a concerned citizen of St. Joseph County—OUR COUNTY— to consider making a tax-deductible donation to the St. Joseph County SWCD, but after   reading our 2011 Annual Report, if you agree that the work we do is important, perhaps you would give some thought to making your contribution today through an Affiliate Membership or our Sponsorship Program?Another way to support the St. Joseph County SWCD comes through our Annual Tree Sale, and this year we are proud to be featuring rain  barrels, rain barrel accessories, and tumbling composters.  For 26 years, these proceeds have allowed us to provide   education and outreach to our community and pay for our annual operating expenses.  In addition, by purchasing these items from us, you are directly improving the quality of our environment in St. Joseph County.  For anyone who would like to take an even more direct approach to helping the SWCD spread the KEY message of SOIL & WATER  CONSERVATION, your contribution of time would be considered invaluable, and we   always welcome volunteers (whether by spending time with us for a day, or by making a commitment to learning what it takes to become a   member of our Board.)

In closing, we sincerely thank you for taking time to learn more about us through reading our 2011 Annual Report, and we hope to see you at our 52nd Annual Meeting.

Most sincerely,
The St. Joseph County Soil & Water Conservation District

Over the last several months, we (the St. Joseph County Soil & Water Conservation District) have been sending "mini-features" on a community rain barrel project that will culminate on Friday, May 6, 2011 with a Rain Barrel Auction... The project is being organized by Kathleen Petitjean, a Fellow with IU South Bend's Center for a Sustainable Future.

Check out Part 16 in this series below:

Written by Kathleen Petitjean:

Although most of my professional artwork is pen and ink, I love an opportunity to pick up a paintbrush and play with colors.  In addition to being an artist, I work as an Occupational Therapist with schoolchildren with special needs.  My “green” activism also keeps me busy with projects with the city of South Bend, Oxfam America and the League of Women Voters.

The Fellowship for this Rain Barrel project was granted to me last summer by IUSB’s Center for a Sustainable Future just as I was leaving for my first visit to Ireland.  Knowing I would be painting one of the barrels, I carried my sketchbook on my trip and allowed the art and natural beauty of Ireland to infuse my work.  My artistic goal was to create an image depicting the dependence on water for all life on Earth.

“Interlace”, the national signature style of Ireland in which bands of motif are intertwined, seemed a natural fit for my design. In Dublin, I was intrigued by the illuminations in the 1200-year–old Book of Kells, and the weaving of ancient Celtic designs with the relatively new stories of Christianity.   From these beginnings, I added our scientific understandings of the development of life on Earth to a work of art I hope serves as a gentle reminder for us to respect the resource we all need for survival; water.

Check out Part 15 in this series below:

    Written by Jill Wygant LaFountain:

Ever since I was a young child I have loved creating things with my hands and expressing myself through art.  Having worked in several mediums, I find I have a certain knack for photography but do enjoy painting with acrylics.
Up until now, all of my paintings have been for my pleasure.  This is the first time I have been tasked with trying to convey an important message with my artwork. For months this barrel sat, primed and ready to receive its colors. As I searched for inspiration, I started to think about what the barrel would hold; this life source we, as a country, tend to take for granted.  I thought of those who thirst and the feeling of having that thirst quenched. I imagined diving into an ocean of water to escape the heat.  I thought of the water that drenches my husband's garden, helping the plants to stand a little taller; refreshed, revived and healthy! Keeping those feelings in mind I began to paint without any plan or picture, I just let the paint swirl and move until the barrel was covered with my vision of water.
I am humbled to have been asked to paint a rain barrel for this important project and to be among this group of amazingly talented local artists.  With my rain barrel, I hope for these things; that you gain a greater appreciation of our natural resource of water, you will work to conserve and protect it and that you will share your knowledge with others.  In addition to these things, I hope my rain barrel brings you pleasure when you look at it!

    Why use a rain barrel?

    There is no "new" water

The water we use today may be the same water some dinosaur drank or bathed in. The water we drink may have traveled through the water cycle hundreds of thousands of times since the earth was formed.

The water cycle is another way of saying that water is recycled.

It falls to earth in the form of rain or snow. Then it runs off into lakes, streams, and oceans or soaks into the ground to become part of the underground water supply. Water in lakes, streams, and oceans evaporates into clouds that make more rain and snow. The underground water eventually comes back to the surface. That water is used in many different ways and also eventually evaporates to become clouds that become rain or snow.

On the other hand, in developed places with houses and roads, rain and snowmelt falls on pavement and other impervious surfaces such as roofs, driveways, sidewalks and parking lots that don’t allow the water to be absorbed by the ground. The water that you see flowing down the street is sometimes called stormwater runoff.

When stormwater hits the pavement and other surfaces, it picks up and mixes with what’s there—including pollutants like oil, grease and fuel from cars and other engines, fertilizer and pesticides used on lawns, gardens and in the home, bacteria from pet waste, and bacteria and nutrients from improperly maintained septic systems.

Rain Barrels connect to your downspout, decreasing the amount of rain that runs off your property.

Why is that important?  Reduced rain and snowmelt runoff helps prevent water pollution and flooding.  Every time it rains, unabsorbed water rushes to storm drains and directly to local waterways.  Again, this water carries with it pollutants such as pet waste, automotive fluids and fertilizer.

Installing a rain barrel benefits the environment and you.  The water saved in rain barrels can be used for watering flowers, gardens and lawns all through the summer, even in times of drought.

Reduced water demand will lower your use of municipal water supplies, saving your money!

Rain barrels are also easy because they require very little maintenance.

    LEARN MORE!

There are so many great websites that offer more information about rain barrels.

Two places to begin are the Indiana Association of Soil and Water Conservation District's Pathway to Water Quality webpage on Rain Barrels and our webpage on Backyard Conservation

    Hello Again!

Over the next several months, we (the St. Joseph County Soil & Water Conservation District) will be sending "mini-features" on a community rain barrel project that will culminate in May 2011 with a Rain Barrel Auction... The project is being organized by Kathleen Petitjean, a Fellow with IU South Bend's Center for a Sustainable Future.

Part 3 of this series provides information on what a rain barrel is, and some benefits to using rain barrels.
